The family of Kanippayyur hails from Kerala, a culturally rich coastal state in South India. The family is prominent in the practice of Traditional Architecture, Temple Building, Astrology and related studies. At the onset of twentieth century, Kanippayyur Shankaran Namboodiripad – one of the legendary practitioners of the Architectural Science – popularized and rejuvenated Vaastu Shastra.
Shankaran Namboodiripad was recognized as the consultant for all temple renovation works in Cochin and Malabar. His opinions were also sought for temple works in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. He also started work centers for making icons and other ancillaries connected with temples. Though he was a social reformer and has authored a large number of books on this aspect, his main concern was centered on the traditional knowledge in Vastuvidya and Jyotisha and their propogation.
Presently the Kanippayyur family is headed by Krishnan Namboodiripad. A post- graduate in mathematics, he is able to look Vastuvidya as systemised traditional knowledge, which can be connected with the modern practices, materials and techniques. He is the dean of all the Universities of Mahirishi Mahesh Yogi and spends six months in a year at the Mahirishi's Holland based complex, teaching and providing advising on the traditional architecture.Several members of Kanippayyur family continue to strive to preserve the tradition of their ancestor. Parameswaran Namboodiripad, a brother of Krishanan Namboodiripad, specialized in Vastuvidya, is a member of the faculty of Vastuvidya Gurukulam. He is also looking after the publication wing of the family. Another brother Narayanan Namboodiripad is specialized in Jyotisha. Practitioners, Researchers and students from India and abroad, seek guidance from the Kanippayyur family in the fields of Vastuvidya, Jyotisha, Tantra and Iconography (the science of making idols for temples).
The family believes that a judicial mix of ancient wisdom and modern techniques is required in any endeavor be it - Architecture, Astrology, Medicine.
